The town survives on tourist that are here because they are going
to the Grand Canyon. Very cute with the typical tourist stuff and
some pretty decent places to eat.
Our Train ride started this morning on the Grand Canyon Railway
at 9 AM and took us the 60 miles north to the South Rim of the Grand
Canyon. The ride took about 2 1/2 hours as the train travels only
about 40 miles an hour when at full speed and of course there
are grades and curves that slowed us as well.
After getting off the train at GC we were at the Santa Fe Railway
Station where trains arrived first in 1901. Before trains the stagecoach
would bring people to the South Rim for $20, then the price plummeted
to only $3.95 for the train ride from Williams.
We went thru the depot on up to El Tovar hotel which was
completed in 1905 at a small cost of $250,000, however
it was a grand place with steam heat, hot and cold running
water, indoor plumbing, electric lights.
We ate lunch at the Bright Angel Lodge with a nice view
of the Canyon Rim before we took off to explore more
around the canyon.
Lookout Studio was pretty spectacular with super views
into the canyon.
Then on to Kolb Studio which once was the home to two
brothers who arrived at the canyon in 1902. Eventually
they would build their home and studio which was 5 floors and
27 rooms. The brothers Ellsworth and Emery were famous
for pictures they took of the canyon.
Our day couldn't have been any better, since only a few days
ago they had over 7 inches of snow and today the weathers
high was around 62 and no wind.
I will post a few of the 100+ pictures taken today.
ok, so a little trickery here... but wow what color
